The role of Culture and Sport in reducing Crime and Anti-social Behaviour

In the wake of the recent riots there has been much discussion about the factors contributing to crime and anti-social behaviour.  Responding to this, the National Culture Forum (NCF) and the Chief Cultural and Leisure Officers Association (cCLOA) working with Culture First have produced a new policy document The role of Culture and Sport in reducing Crime and Anti-social Behaviour providing a timely mandate for shared future action.

Written with the aim of helping providers of culture and sport services better understand community safety and crime reduction agendas, the document is also intended to introduce agencies such as the Police and Community Safety Partnerships to the opportunities and benefits that could be secured through closer engagement with the culture and sport sector.

The document identifies some of the ways that the sector can contribute to reducing the actuality and fear of crime through engaging with the right partnerships. It also provides guidance on better evidencing the contribution the sector can make to local priority outcomes.

A number of practical real world case studies consider the impact of a range of targeted interventions that have a track record of successfully diverting those most at risk of offending through culture and sports based activities.

We hope that you will find the document informative and, in order to help grow the body of evidence, cCLOA invite you to share your own local case studies by completing the template below and returning it to admin@cloa.org.uk
