Health and well-being:from policy to practice
The Pavilion, Birmingham City University, B6 7AA
Background
Engaging in sport and physical activity has multiple health benefits; it can reduce the risk of developing illnesses ranging from cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes to stress, anxiety and depression. Sport and physical activity also play an important role in delivering outcomes for ‘Be healthy’ as part of the Every Child Matters framework for children and young people’s services.
But it’s not just about physical benefits; well-being is more than an absence of problems or illness; it’s about the personal and the social. Cultural activities like art, libraries and museums also play an important role for example in the lives of older people with targeted services to reduce isolation and help maintain independence. They also help everyone to maintain positive mental health.
In the last year we have seen a number of new policies emerge all of which will bring changes to the way in which our sector works in future. Local authorities are set to take responsibility for public health in 2013 and as part of this Health and Well-being Boards will be instrumental in joining up commissioning across the NHS, public health and social care sectors to meet local priorities.
